Gregory “Duff” Morton’s Book Awarded SLACA Book Prize

By: Colin Powell School

Professor Gregory “Duff” Morton’s book Return from the World: Economic Growth and Reverse Migration in Brazil is the co-winner of the 2024 Society for Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology (SLACA) Book Prize competition.

SLACA, a section of the American Anthropological Association, recognizes distinguished anthropological work that advances the understanding of the Americas in innovative and potentially transformative ways through its annual Book Prize competition.

Return from the World: Economic Growth and Reverse Migration in Brazil investigates why some Brazilian workers leave urban centers — and their thriving markets — to return to their home villages to become farmers. Morton seeks to understand what it means to turn one’s back deliberately on the promise of economic growth. Bringing their stories vividly to life, Morton dives into the dreams and disputes at play in finding freedom in the shared rejection of growth.

To be eligible for SLACA’s Book Prize award, a book must be relevant to the field of Latin American and Caribbean anthropology, works should be ethnographies or monographs, and they must be the author’s first book.
