ADMISSIONS
Acceptance is based on assessment of an applicant’s overall academic record, letters of recommendation, personal and supplemental essays, and clinical and research experiences.
A master’s degree in Psychology (or other clinical field) is not a prerequisite for acceptance. Students may enter the program with an undergraduate major in Psychology or in another field.
Applicants must have completed 15 credits in Psychology (typically five classes of 3 credits each). These credits must include at least one semester of Statistics and one semester of Experimental Psychology (Laboratory). Applicants who have not studied psychology as an undergraduate can either enroll in a post-baccalaureate program or take the required courses at a university that accepts non-matriculated students.
Application Process
Please note: A writing sample is not required for admissions. However, You may submit a writing sample if you feel it would help us get to know you better.
The Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology takes a holistic approach to evaluating personal statements, considering a range of factors that reflect your academic, professional, and personal experiences. Your personal statement should address the following key areas:
Educational and Professional Background: Highlight your previous education, relevant experiences, and accomplishments that have prepared you for doctoral-level work in clinical psychology.
Future Goals: Discuss your academic and professional aspirations and how pursuing this program aligns with your career path.
Personal Perspective: Share who you are beyond your qualifications, providing insight into your values, motivations, and unique qualities.
Specialization and Preparation: Include details about your intended area of specialization, your preparation for that focus, and any specific skills or experiences that support your choice.
We encourage you to focus on your unique journey and relevant experiences rather than listing faculty members you hope to work with, as this program does not follow a mentorship model. However, if you choose to mention potential faculty advisors, please ensure they are core faculty members of the CCNY Clinical Psychology doctoral program.
We require transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended, whether or not they include courses in Psychology departments. You may submit unofficial transcripts at the time of application, but upon acceptance, you will be required to provide official transcripts.
Please submit at least two letters of recommendation. We have no requirements as far as who writes your recommendation letters. In general, it is a good idea to include at least one from a professor, and one from a supervisor or employer, someone who can speak to your experiences, clinical work, research, and/or character. It is important to ask people who can speak of you with real knowledge of your abilities and personal qualities in depth. You may include more than two letters.
Please describe how your personal and/or professional characteristics, experiences, and interests have shaped who you are and why you seek to join this field (Length: 500 words, maximum)
A resume or curriculum vitae detailing educational experience, research experience, presentation/publication experience, academic awards/honors, and other relevant skills and experiences
Effective for the 2024-2025 admissions cycle, both the General GRE and Subject GRE in Psychology are required for admission. Please submit your scores for both the General GRE and the GRE Subject Test in Psychology.Â

Clinical Training, Externship, & Internship
The Psychological Center serves as the primary practicum site for doctoral student training. Students conduct psychological evaluations, treat child & adult patients, conduct group & couples psychotherapy, and administer neuropsychological assessments. Externships and clinical fellowships are optional for students and complement training received at The Psychological Center. All practicum are integrated into the PhD curriculum through courses, clinic teams, and supervision.

Clinical Training Year One
Weekly Clinic Supervisory Teams:  All students participate in a Clinic Supervisory Team beginning in their first semester and for the duration that students treat patients at The Psychological Center. Students present clinical cases and engage in an ongoing weekly dialogue with each other and the Clinic Directors regarding crisis, clinical emergencies, ongoing treatments, termination of care, and disposition of cases.
Psychological Screenings & Desk Duty:Â Students conduct preliminary psychological evaluations of incoming patients & operate the front desk for one hour per week.
Intake & Psychotherapy:Â Beginning in the second semester of year one, students take either the Child Intake or Adult Intake course, where they learn how to conduct comprehensive child or adult evaluations. Upon completion of these courses, students begin to treat their first patients for ongoing psychotherapy and simultaneously begin to meet weekly with a supervisor for each therapy case.

Clinical Training Year Two
Increased Psychotherapy Caseload: Students continue to treat their patients from the previous year. In the fall semester, students take a practicum course (either Child Practicum if Child Intake was completed in Year 1 or Adult Practicum if they completed Adult Intake). In addition, students enroll in the intake course (Adult or Child) not yet completed. In the spring semester, students take the practicum course not yet completed (Adult or Child Practicum). By the Spring semester, students have full caseloads (3 case minimum).
1:1 supervision in first year:Â Students receive one supervisor per case in their first year of training.
Neuropsychological Testing:Â In the third semester (fall of the second year), students complete their first battery as part of the Neuropsychological Assessment course. In the fourth semester (the spring of their second year), students usually complete a second battery.
Continue to attend Clinic Supervisory Teams & conduct screenings via desk duty

Clinical Training Years Three and Four
Ongoing psychotherapy:Â Students continue to carry a minimum of six direct intervention hours per week.
Neuropsychological Testing:Â In the first semester of third year, students will complete their third battery. In the Spring semester of their third year, students will be required to complete the two remaining batteries.
EBT treatment:Â In addition, students may choose to receive training in an empirically supported treatment and/or co-lead a psychotherapy group.
Clinical Hours:Â Students complete their mandatory residency at The Clinic at the end of their 4th year and also must have a minimum of 500 direct clinical hours.
Externships:Â Additional clinical experiences are available through external externships & fellowships after a student completes the prerequisite hours and courses at The Clinic. These additional clinical experiences complement the in-house clinical work by offering students an opportunity to work with particular populations (i.e. serious mental illness, LGTBQ, school-based, hospital, inpatient).
CUNY Fellowships: Clinical fellowships offer students the opportunity to serve as a therapist within the CUNY system. These experiences increase the range of clinical experiences students can have while in the program by specifically offering training at counseling centers. Students can apply for a fellowship in their 3rd year or beyond.

Clinical Training Internships
Students are required to complete a year-long APA-accredited internship in Clinical Psychology before graduating from the Program. The internship experience normally takes place during the fifth or sixth year of a student’s training, although the timing of the internship is usually based on the student’s pace of finishing other requirements, and completion of the dissertation proposal, as well as other personal considerations.
The Program has an outstanding record of acceptances to highly competitive APA-approved internships in the New York Metropolitan Area. These internships typically involve rigorous training in a range of clinical competencies, some of which are new to students but at which they typically excel. Virtually all internships involve work with diverse populations and many are located in New York City.
