Adonis Iciano —MPA Student Spotlight✨

By: Colin Powell School

Today’s #facultyspotlight is Adonis, a first-year student in our MPA Program!

What brought you to the City College of New York and to tWhat brought you to the City College of New York and to the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership?he Colin Powell school for Civic and Global Leadership?

I’m an alum of City College of New York, I got my BA of Psychology here so I already had a relationship to the school and it’s social justice orientation is what has kept me coming back!

What advice would you give to future or prospective MPA students?

Speak to me, speak to someone who graduated from the program, or just get in active communication with someone from the team. Set up a 1:1 and grow relationships with people so you can get a deep understanding of what’s here for you and why it’s important for you. My advice is to communicate and be willing to stay curious!

What do you enjoy most about being part of the MPA community?

The aspect I enjoy most about being a part of the MPA community is being interconnected to a group of social justice orientated professionals, I’m expanding my network, but what’s most important is that the MPA community can be a home for the movement of Black & Brown, likeminded folks to come together and change their local communities.

What inspired you to pursue an MPA?

I’ll be creating my own non-profit to organize in the Bronx so I pursued a MPA to give me the skills, tools, and knowledge to lead a successful organization.

What has been your favorite class or professor so far, and why?

Strategic Communications with Professor Eric Malone, it reminds me a lot of the organizing work I’ve done. It’s about building a strategic campaign to communicate which closely aligns to building a strategic campaign to organize, I see myself using a lot of these frameworks and templates in my actual work!

What are your plans or hopes after graduation?

My plan after graduation is to start my non-profit, become a pillar for the social justice movement, and create pipelines for Black & Brown, working-class individuals to get organized and become powerful!
