Adam Beckman, MD, MBA

Dr. Beckman is a physician with experience in safety-net clinical care, government leadership, and health innovation. He is a founding leadership member of HOLI, where he serves as Senior Scholar, and he practices primary care at Brookside Community Health Center within Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He previously served as the Special Advisor to the 21st U.S. Surgeon General and worked with primary care practices at Aledade to expand physician-led Accountable Care Organizations. His portfolio at HOLI includes student mentorship, new partnerships, and building initiatives at the intersection of artificial intelligence, public health, and health equity.
Kalpana Bhandarkar, MPH, MBA

Ms. Bhandarkar has nearly 20 years of experience in health care and civic engagement. She has dedicated her professional career to improving access to quality health care for people living in low-resource settings, having held leadership positions at three New York City hospitals (NYC Health + Hospitals, Maimonides Medical Center, and Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center) and having worked in health care consulting serving safety net hospitals. Ms. Bhandarkar serves as Principal of Spring Bhee Advisory, delivering advisory and consulting services for health care and non-profit organizations.
Helen Arteaga-Landaverde, MPH, PhD | Senior HOLI Fellow
Dr. Arteaga-Landaverde is the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services in NYC, appointed by Mayor Mamdani in January 2026. As Deputy Mayor, she oversees thirteen agencies and offices across the health, social services, children’s services and related areas. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Arteaga-Landaverde served as CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, the second oldest public hospital in NYC. She was the first woman and the first Latina to helm the hospital’s executive team. Under her leadership, Elmhurst has been recognized as one of U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Regional Hospitals” and as one of the nation’s “High Performing” hospitals, as well as a “Top Place to Work” by City and State NY. Over her five years as CO of Elmhurst, she secured millions in public funding for key capital projects, including $27.5 Million from New York State for a new Women’s Pavilion and a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, along with other funds totaling close to $140 million for major improvement initiatives.
Nichola Davis, MD, MS | Senior HOLI Fellow
Dr. Davis is Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer at NYC Health and Hospitals. In this capacity, Dr. Davis leads Population Health and Research Administration overseeing initiatives that include innovative care models, population health analytics, chronic disease prevention and management, and social medicine. Additionally, she co-chairs the Equity & Access Council at NYC Health + Hospitals and is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Population Health at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Previously, Dr. Davis was the Director of Ambulatory Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx. She is also board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine.
Torian Easterling, MD, MPH | Senior HOLI Fellow
Dr. Easterling is a physician and public health leader, renowned for his equity and public health work. As an expert on racial inequalities in the medical field, Dr. Easterling was appointed the first Chief Equity Officer for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. As First Deputy Commissioner and inaugural Chief Equity Officer, he worked to align external and internal equity initiatives. He led the New York City equity response to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensured equitable distribution of vaccines to vulnerable communities. Dr. Easterling recently served as the Senior Vice President for Population and Community Health and Chief Strategic and Innovation Officer for the One Brooklyn Health system where he helped lead creation of the Office of Community Health and Health Equity. Dr. Easterling spends his time investing in the next generation of health care leaders as the Director for Young Doctors Project-NY.
Thomas Fisher, MD | Senior HOLI Fellow
Dr. Fisher is a board-certified emergency medicine physician at The University of Chicago and the Author of The Emergency: A year of healing and heartbreak in a Chicago ER, one of Time Magazine’s 100 Must Read Books of 2022. For two decades he’s worked to improve healthcare across government, industry and academia. Dr. Fisher delivered the 2011 HHS Action Plan for Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities as a White House Fellow in the Obama Administration and helped build a Medicaid managed care plan to serve 70k members in Cook County. Dr. Fisher used these experiences to construct companies at Redesign Health that promise to improve everyone’s healthcare. He was a 2026 candidate for the Illinois 7th Congressional district and continues to deliver care in the same South Side community where he was raised. Dr. Fisher was a RWJ Clinical Scholar, Crain’s Chicago Business 40 under 40, and Fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Health Innovators Fellowship.
Dr. Forman is a Professor of Diagnostic Radiology (and faculty director for Finance), Public Health (Health Policy), Economics and Management. He directs the Health Care Management program in the Yale School of Public Health and teaches healthcare economics in the Yale College Economics Department. He is the faculty founder and director of the MD/MBA program and faculty director of the healthcare focus area in the School of Management’s MBA for Executives program. As a practicing emergency/trauma radiologist, Dr. Forman is actively involved in patient care and issues related to financial administration, healthcare compliance, and contracting. His research has focused on improving imaging services delivery through better access to information.
Errol Pierre, DBA, MPA | Senior HOLI Fellow
Mr. Pierre is the Chief Growth Officer of Healthfirst, Inc, the largest non-profit health plan in New York State. In this role, he is accountable for growth, profit/loss, community engagement, and sales and retention for the Medicaid, Medicare, and Long Term Care product portfolios. Prior to Healthfirst, he spent over 12 years at Empire BlueCross BlueShield, the largest for-profit health plan in New York State. In addition, Mr. Pierre is an adjunct professor at New York University, Columbia University, and Baruch College teaching various courses in Healthcare and Business and volunteers for various non-profit organizations. He is the author of The Way Up: Climbing the Corporate Mountain as a Professional of Color.
Ayrenne Adams, MD, MPH | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Adams is currently the Medical Director of Integrated Clinical Services at Accompany Health, building and scaling transitions of care services and 24/7 virtual urgent care programs for a diverse dual-eligible and Medicare Advantage patient population in urban and rural settings. She is also an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She has previously served clinical and administrative roles at NYC Health + Hospitals and Galileo Medical. She is excited about building, designing, implementing, and evaluating health system structures, programs and policies to achieve equitable care and outcomes for all patients. She completed her Internal Medicine / Primary Care residency training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate. She has been named a 2023 Aspen Ideas Health Fellow and 2022 40 Under 40 Leader in Health by the National Minority Quality Forum.
Chelsea Cipriano, MPH | HOLI Fellow
Ms. Cipriano serves as Executive Director of the Common Health Coalition, where she works to improve partnerships between healthcare and public health organizations so the health system can better serve people. Prior to this role, she served as Executive Director of Government Affairs and Deputy Public Information Officer (for the COVID-19, Mpox responses) for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Ms. Cipriano also served in the NYC Mayor’s Office, first as a Health Policy Advisor and then as Deputy Chief of Staff for the Office of Management and Budget. She has held additional roles in public health at multiple levels of government focusing on policy, emergency response, and partnerships, including with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Leo Eisenstein, MD | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Leo Gordon Eisenstein is a primary care doctor at NYC Health + Hospitals / Kings County. In the public hospital system, he also works on health equity initiatives such as providing primary care for people with a history of incarceration, improving access to kidney transplant, and enhancing services for patients with sickle cell disease. Leo was a member of the advisory council for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Coalition to End Racism in Clinical Algorithms. He got his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at NYU and Bellevue Hospitals. During residency, he served as a union delegate for the Committee of Interns & Residents (CIR-SEIU). Leo was born and raised on the Upper West Side and now lives in Brooklyn.
Margaret Hayden, MD, MPhil | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Hayden is an assistant professor of medicine and a primary care doctor. She is a co-founder, along with HOLI Fellows Micah Johnson and Sanjay Kishore, of EqualCure, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating Hepatitis C. She graduated from Harvard Medical School in 2019, where she studied the stigma surrounding care of patients with addiction. She completed internal medical residency in the primary care track at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and worked as a primary care doctor at Upham’s Corner Health Center, a federally qualified health clinic. Prior to coming to UVA, Dr. Hayden worked at the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, and helped start a health clinic providing basic primary care and hepatitis C diagnosis and treatment for individuals leaving jails and prisons across the state. She also served as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Alabama Birmingham.
Micah Johnson, MD | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Johnson is a physician and health policy expert dedicated to improving the U.S. health care system. He is a Co-Founder of EqualCure, a nonprofit organization focused on using technological innovation to help eliminate hepatitis C. Dr. Johnson practices internal medicine as a hospitalist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. From 2023-2025 he served as a Health Policy Fellow at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he co-led the development of Medicare legislative proposals for the President’s Budget and worked with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center on prescription drug and Medicare reforms. Dr. Johnson previously worked on U.S. health care issues in Congress, state Medicaid programs, the White House, and presidential campaigns. He has published in journals including JAMA and Health Affairs. His book Medicare for All: A Citizen’s Guide—co-authored with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed—rigorously examines the history, policy, and politics of universal health care in America.
Sanjay Kishore, MD | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Kishore is a physician and co-founder of EqualCure, where he is helping build technology-enabled models to expand access to curative hepatitis C treatment. He directs UVA’s Health and Advocacy Leadership (HEAL) residency track and is leading efforts to expand access to screening and treatment of hepatitis C among hospitalized patients. Previously, Dr. Kishore founded a clinic with the Equal Justice Initiative in Alabama providing low-threshold hepatitis C and primary care for people leaving prison. He completed his residency in internal medicine and primary care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, earned his MD from Harvard Medical School, and graduated from Duke University.
Kamal Menghrajani, MD, MS | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Menghrajani currently serves as the inaugural Medical Director for AI at Doximity — the nation’s largest professional network for physicians — while continuing to practice oncology at Harvard / Mass General Brigham in Boston. In this dual role, she is shaping how artificial intelligence is developed, evaluated, and responsibly deployed across clinical medicine. In 2023, Dr. Menghrajani was asked to join the White House to serve as the oncologist for the Cancer Moonshot and the physician for the Health Outcomes team. As a White House Fellow and then an Assistant Director at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Dr. Menghrajani created and executed strategic initiatives around cell & gene therapy, global health, clinical trials, rare diseases, the decline in life expectancy, and more. She concluded her service at the White House in January 2025.
Anthony W. Okolo, MD, MPH | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Okolo serves as Director of Service for the NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Home Based Primary Care Program, overseeing teams providing in-home care for medically complex patients across Brooklyn. He also serves as Medical Director for the NYC Health + Hospitals Accountable Care Organization, leading clinical strategy and health initiatives focused on value-based care, care transitions, and improving outcomes for high-risk populations. Dr. Okolo works to address the needs of frail older adults, high-utilizing patients, and individuals living with chronic illnesses. His work focuses on clinical innovation, care coordination, and integrating social determinants of health into health system operations. Dr. Okolo is an attending physician in the Kings County Ambulatory Care Department, providing primary care, hospitalist and geriatric-focused services. Dr. Okoli helped launch Montefiore’s first Health Equity Rounds and collaborated on initiatives focused on equity, medical education, and institutional responses to ageism and racism in healthcare settings.
Sunny Patel, MD, MPH | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Patel is associate professor of psychiatry and pediatrics and faculty member at the Thrive Center for Children, Families, and Communities at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He is a child, adolescent, and perinatal psychiatrist, and practices at a federally qualified health clinic in D.C. treating the behavioral health needs of pregnant people and children. Most recently, Dr. Patel served as Senior Advisor for Children, Youth, and Families — and briefly as Acting Chief of Staff — at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Prior to SAMHSA, Dr. Patel was appointed a White House Fellow and served at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security where he worked on issues at the nexus of immigration and public health.
Victor Roy, MD, PhD | HOLI Fellow
Dr. Roy is a family physician and sociologist working to achieve health equity through scholarship, education, and community-partnered change efforts. He is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Pennsylvania. He also directs the Health and Political Economy Project based at the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy. Dr. Roy’s research examines economic systems that shape health for marginalized patients, focusing specifically on access to medicines and the financialization of health care. His book, Capitalizing a Cure: How Finance Controls the Price and Value of Medicines, centered on the political economy of drug pricing and access to medicines via the case of curative treatments for hepatitis C. Dr, Roy is interested in perinatal health, addiction medicine, comorbid chronic conditions, and practices in primary care and inpatient settings. Previously, he co-founded and served as Executive Director of GlobeMed, a network of students on university campuses partnering with communities around the world to tackle poverty and health inequity.
Kristiana Yao, MPhil | HOLI Fellow
Ms. Yao is a Senior Advisor and health coverage wonk at the Institute for Healthcare Delivery Design, where she advances population health through human-centered policy and programs. She previously served as a Senior Advisor in the Biden-Harris Administration within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of the Administrator, where she drove agency strategy on nursing home reform, health IT, and other cross-program issues. Ms. Yao has held policy roles with the U.S. Senate, the City of Chicago, and the State of Illinois, where she helped develop nation-leading nursing facility Medicaid rate reform. She began her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant and is a Rhodes Scholar and Truman Scholar.
Bill Bernstein is the Chairperson of the Board of the Firm of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP and leader of Manatt Health, a national legal and consulting practice that combines legal excellence, first-hand experience in shaping public policy, strategic and business planning expertise, and analytic capabilities to assist health care stakeholders in implementing their goals. Mr. Bernstein serves as Chairperson of the Center for Democracy and Technology, as Chairperson of Human Rights in China, as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Citizens Budget Commission of New York, as a member of the Board of Trustees for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer-Center, and as a member of the Health Policy and Management Executive Council at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Mr. Bernstein is an adjunct professor of Health Law and Regulation at NYU School of Law. He was named a 2021 Champion of Public Health by Public Health Solutions for his work leading the NYC COVID-19 Rapid Response Coalition, and named to the City & State’s 2021 Health Power 100 list. Mr. Bernstein received his B.A. and M.A. from Brown University and his J.D. from the NYU School of Law, where he served as a Root-Tilden Scholar and an Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Fellow. Mr. Bernstein began his career working as a special assistant at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and as a law clerk for The Honorable Raymond J Pettine, U.S. District Court of Rhode Island.
Dr. Sami Jarrah serves as the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration and Executive Director for Public Partnerships for the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health where he directs the school’s compliance, facilities, finance, information technology, and human resources functions. Dr. Jarrah previously spent his career serving the public’s health, including as Deputy Health Commissioner and Chief Financial Officer for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Jarrah also served for five years as Deputy Health Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, helping grow the health department’s budget, which enabled new programs focused on asthma inequities, injury and violence prevention, racial and ethnic health disparities, and health care access. Prior to 2016, Dr. Jarrah served for five years as Deputy Director for Integrated Clinical Services at the Multnomah County Health Department in Portland, Oregon, where he transformed Oregon’s Medicaid program, expanded services at school-based health centers, improved behavioral health services for inmate and youth detention populations, and strengthened the agency’s finance and project management capacity. Earlier in his career, Dr. Jarrah worked at universities and in corporate, foundation, and government relations. He has led policy efforts and coalitions focused on preemption, gun violence, public health workforce, and federal and state funding for local public health. Jarrah earned a DrPH from Johns Hopkins University, an MPH from University of Washington, and a BA from Davidson College.
Dennis Johnson is Senior Advisor on Community Engagement at Mother Cabrini Health Foundation where he helps execute the foundation’s mission to improve the health and well-being of underserved communities and populations in New York State. A longtime children’s advocate, Dennis spent 27 years as Executive Vice President for Government Affairs at the non-profit Children’s Health Fund, which supports innovative pediatric programs and policies designed to meet the complex health care needs of medically underserved and economically disadvantaged children. Mr. Johnson received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his master’s degree in political management from the Graduate School of Political Management at Baruch College.
Sophie Kim Goldmacher has spent her career in public service, serving in senior leadership roles in government, higher education, nonprofit, and philanthropy. She currently oversees operations for the environment program at Bloomberg Philanthropies. She previously served as Chief People Officer of the national ACLU, helped launch Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service, and served as Deputy Director of the White House Fellows program, the nation’s premier public service fellowship, during the Obama administration. She serves on the board of Women of Georgetown, is co-president of her class board for Wellesley College, and is a member of the advisory council of the CUNY Health and Opportunity Leadership Institute. Sophie received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Wellesley College and a Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University, serving as the student commencement speaker at both institutions. Sophie is a native of California, where she started her career working in both houses of the state legislature.
Gara LaMarche is a Leader in Residence at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at City College in New York, where he also teaches and co-chairs Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, which he co-founded in 2021 He is also Senior Adviser at Raben, Board Chair of The New Press, the progressive non-profit publishing house, and Vice-Chair of The Fund for Global Human Rights and Freedom Reads. His nearly half-century career in human rights, social justice and philanthropy included stints as President of the Democracy Alliance and The Atlantic Philanthropies, and he was the founding director of US Programs for the Open Society Foundations for 11 years beginning in 1996. He also held senior positions at the American Civil Liberties Union, PEN America and Human Rights Watch.
Rose Pierre-Louis is the Executive Director of the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research. She leads a team of scholars, clinicians, and policy experts dedicated to dismantling the root causes of poverty and translating research into evidence-based interventions. A recognized public sector leader, Rose has driven social and economic change for vulnerable populations. She previously served as McSilver’s Chief Operating Officer and hosted the podcast, Black Boys and Men: Changing The Narrative. Rose’s served as Senior Adviser to the NYC Commission on Gender Equity and Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence. From 2006 to 2013, she was the Manhattan Deputy Borough President, where she led initiatives in transportation, sustainability, and criminal justice reform. Her background also includes leadership roles at Sanctuary for Families and Harlem Legal Services, as well as six years as an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law. Rose was appointed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the U.S. delegation following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. She is the Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Haitian Roundtable and she is an Executive Board Member of the Committee for Ranked Choice Voting NYC. In April 2022, Rose was appointed Co-Chair of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) blue ribbon “Fareness” panel to address solutions to reduce fare evasion. Rose has been recognized with the Common Cause NY Democracy Defender Award, the Metropolitan Black Bar Association’s Public Servant of the Year, and on City & State’s Power 100 lists. Rose holds a B.A. in Political Science from Tufts University and a J.D. from Case Western University School of Law.
As executive vice president of the institute for community health and wellness, Dr. Salas-Lopez oversees Northwell Health’s community and population health strategy, including community relations, social responsibility, and needs assessments. Her leadership was critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, where she partnered with community leaders to identify their most pressing needs. This became the catalyst for the creation of Northwell’s Health Equity Taskforce, composed of community, faith and tribal nation leaders who work on equity and social issues that impact health. Dr. Salas-Lopez previously served as the chief transformation officer at Lehigh Valley Health Network, where she led population health initiatives, telehealth, strategic partnerships, and redesigning of the clinical delivery system. Academically, she was a professor of medicine at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine and the College of Public Health. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Salas-Lopez is a nationally recognized speaker and educator on women leaders; health care disparities and equity in care; cultural awareness and language-appropriate services; and the impact of social and economic factors on health. In 2021, she was honored by the Healthcare Association of New York State with a Community Health Improvement Award. She also earned a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Leadership Award, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless Key of Excellence Award, the Empire Whole Health Heroes Award and the Tribute to Excellence in Health Care Award from the United Hospital Fund. In 2024, she was named by Becker’s Healthcare as a top Hispanic health care executive in the country and Crain’s as a New York Notable Healthcare Leader.
David Sandman is the President and CEO of the New York Health Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to improving the health of New Yorkers, especially people of color and others who have been historically marginalized. Previously, Dr. Sandman was appointed by the Governor of New York as Executive Director of the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, also known as the “Berger Commission.”, which was charged to evaluate and reform the State’s health care delivery and financing systems. After serving as Executive Director of the Berger Commission, Dr. Sandman became a Managing Director of Manatt Health Solutions, where he advised health care providers, foundations, payers, associations, government, and companies regarding development of new health care programs, services, and restructuring plans. Earlier, he was a Vice President at Harris Interactive, a global research and consulting firm. Dr. Sandman previously served as Assistant Vice President at the Commonwealth Fund, where he was responsible for projects related to health care coverage and access, health care in NYC, Medicare, and quality of care issues. He also served as a policy analyst with the City of New York Department of Health; at a number of community-based HIV/AIDS organizations; and as a researcher at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sandman received his Bachelor of Arts degree, Phi Beta Kappa, from Haverford College, and his Master of Public Administration degree and Ph.D. from NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service. He is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and a former board member of Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and Philanthropy New York.
Anthony Shih is senior advisor for programs at the Commonwealth Fund. He is a physician executive who has held senior positions at many of the leading health policy nonprofit organizations in New York City. Shih has served as president and CEO of United Hospital Fund, executive vice president at the New York Academy of Medicine, and executive vice president for programs at the Commonwealth Fund. He was also chief strategic initiatives officer at Community Healthcare Network. He is a board member of the Milbank Memorial Fund and an adjunct clinical professor at the NYU School of Global Public Health. Board-certified in preventive medicine and public health, Shih earned a B.A. in economics from Amherst College; an M.D. from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine; and an M.P.H. from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
During her three decades of leadership and management experience Anne Williams-Isom has served as Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services where she ensured that the City’s healthcare and social services systems were run compassionately, equitably and effectively for all New Yorkers. She has served as an educator at Fordham Graduate School of Social Service (GSS), the Chief Executive Officer for the Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ), in various leadership roles at the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, and as a practicing attorney. She currently serves as the Senior James Dumpson Fellow at GSS. She holds a bachelor’s degree, a law degree, and a doctorate in ministry.
