Climate Action: People, Power, and Policy

Almost a decade after Hurricane Sandy, NYC and its more than 8 million habitants are even more vulnerable to the worst effects of a rapidly evolving climate crisis. How can we adapt to protect the people and spaces that make up our communities?\nPlease join us for a conversation with Andrés Bernal – CUNY Lecturer, organizer, and senior policy advisor – to explore what climate policies and actions might offer pathways for achieving a just and sustainable society.\nBobby Derival, Executive Director of the Master in Public Administration (MPA) Program at the Colin Powell School, will moderate the event.
SPEAKER:
Andrés Bernal was born in Bogota, Colombia and immigrated to the United States as a child. He has a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and an MA from the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Educational Sciences, where he was mentored by renowned scholar-practitioner Zachary Green of Group Relations International. Andrés has over a decade of experience in youth leadership development and community building. He previously worked as a policy advisor to the Congressional campaign of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He currently serves as the Director of Political Education for the Young Progressives of America. He is also a Lecturer of Urban Studies at CUNY Queens College and a doctoral student at The New School, where his research focuses on the Green New Deal. Additionally, Andrés is a leading proponent of Modern Monetary Theory and serves as a Research Fellow at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Missouri Kansas City Department of Economics. Bobby is the Executive Director of CCNY’s Master in Public Administration Program. He is a trained public health practitioner, and received a BA in Sociology at Fordham University before earning a Master in Public Health and a Master of Arts in International Peace and Conflict Resolution at Arcadia University. Prior to joining the Colin Powell School, Bobby held positions in both the public and private sectors, most recently serving as Chief Operating Officer for a Queens-based home care services provider. Bobby serves as a board member at Hands Up for Haiti, an international public health nonprofit run and led by Haitians, and has also helped launch and implement public health projects in Thailand and Bangladesh.
The Master in Public Administration program, housed in the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, prepares degree candidates – especially those from communities traditionally underserved and intentionally marginalized – with the skill and capacity to drive equitable change in the public sector and in mission-driven organizations.
