Powell School Economics and Business Department Welcomes New Fulbright Scholar

By: Colin Powell School

We are delighted to share that Dr. Tanika Chakraborty, Professor at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to visit CCNY at the invitation of our faculty. Fully funded and visa-sponsored by Fulbright, Dr. Chakraborty will be based in the Economics and Business department and work from the department’s office.

This is one of the most prestigious fellowships,” said Economics Department Chair Prabal De, “and puts our department on an international map.

Professor Chakraborty’s research sits at the intersection of health, development, and public policy, which she highlights “makes the Colin Powell School a natural fit.” Diving deeper into her expectations of the new role, Chakraborty shares “I am especially excited about the opportunity to engage with colleagues from multiple disciplines who share similar research and policy interests. These interactions will not only strengthen my current projects but also deepen my understanding of U.S. health policy.

During her time at City College, Professor Chakraborty plans to deliver guest lectures in courses on health economics and policy. She hopes that students take advantage of her background and experience to explore new interests and perspectives. “I will introduce students to my research on health in low- and middle-income countries. My goal is to help them connect my work to the broader themes they are studying in the course and to encourage them to think comparatively about health systems” points out Chakraborty , highlighting how she’s also excited to learn from her students’ experiences “I am particularly looking forward to hearing their perspectives on the U.S. health market, which will both complement and challenge my work in the context of LMICs, and hopefully spark a mutually enriching dialogue.

The Fulbright fellowship highlights our growing international profile and strengthens our academic connections worldwide. It is specially poignant considering how Professor Chakraborty’s background and research will help advance the Powell School’s mission, as she eloquently points out “equitable access to health is both a pathway to individual opportunity and a matter of equity. I bring a comparative perspective on how different societies confront questions of inequality and state capacity in access to healthcare. At the Powell School, I see my role as contributing to a global conversation on these issues while also learning from students and colleagues who are deeply engaged with the U.S. context.
