CCNY Launches The Joseph Berechman Award for Excellence in Economics

By: Colin Powell School

The City College of New York is proud to announce the establishment of the Joseph Berechman Award for Excellence in Economics, made possible through a generous $10,000 gift. This new award will permanently strengthen the Department of Economics and Business by recognizing and celebrating outstanding student achievement each year.

The award honors Dr. Joseph (Yossi) Berechman, who has served as the Marvin Kristein Professor since 2014 and is a former Chair of the Department. Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Berechman has held academic appointments in Israel, Canada, and the United States, while also contributing extensively as a consultant and researcher in the fields of transportation and urban infrastructure.

Each academic year, the graduating Economics major with the highest GPA will be awarded $1,000 and recognized at the Department’s annual year-end celebration, with their family invited to share in the occasion.

The inaugural recipient, Jamaly Collado, expressed deep gratitude:
“I am truly honored to receive this recognition as I complete my senior year at the Colin Powell School. Thank you for your generosity and support.”

By establishing this award, CCNY both celebrates academic excellence and invests in the next generation of economics leaders, while paying tribute to Dr. Berechman’s enduring contributions to the College and to the field.
