What is a mentor?

A mentor can play an important role in students’ academic, professional, and personal success by providing guidance and support during their time as a student and beyond.

A mentor is someone that has more life experience that can help guide you and provide support as you try to actualize and reach your goals.

Student Success Guide Program
As a first-generation student, I was fortunate to receive the guidance and resources necessary for academic success and professional development through the Student Success Guide Program. Because of this support, I feel it’s my responsibility to pay it forward by assisting future students as an SSG peer mentor.

My mentor has given me valuable tips and insights into job searching and my professional career. They provided me with the resources they used to prepare for their post-grad careers, and with their nonstop support and guidance, I gained a post-grad internship. Our interactions were valuable, and I plan to keep in touch with them post-grad and throughout my professional career.

Navigating college as a first-generation student can be a daunting task. However, being given the opportunity to connect with an older peer with similar aspirations helped me feel at ease and informed me of the vast opportunities available at the City College of New York. As a senior, not only have I taken advantage of these opportunities, but I now serve as a mentor for incoming freshmen to help them feel the same support I did and to ensure that they know they are not alone.

As a college student, I’ve experienced the power of mentorship throughout my collegiate journey. Being both a mentee and a mentor has shown me how impactful guidance and support can be in reaching academic and personal goals. As an SSG mentee, I gained valuable advice and confidence, and now, as an SSG mentor, I’m excited to give back by helping students build connections, overcome challenges, and make the most of their college experience.
