For students stepping into their first internship interview or professional role, confidence matters. And so does having the right outfit. The Colin Powell School’s Public Service Career Hub has partnered with Bottomless Closet, a nonprofit that provides professional clothing and career coaching for female-identified individuals entering the workforce.
The partnership aims to close the gap between “knowing” what it takes to be career-ready and “embodying” it by helping students get free access to a professional wardrobe. Maya Gutierrez, Director of the Public Service Career Hub, describes what motivated her to seek out this partnership “Many college students — particularly in high-cost areas like New York City — juggle tuition, housing, and food expenses, leaving little to no budget for professional wardrobes.”
To date, 75 Powell School students have taken part in the “Bottomless Closet Experience,” walking away not just with clothing, but with a boost of readiness and self-assurance.
Student Aliyah Batista put it best: “The staff are so kind, helpful, and supportive with any questions I had about going into an interview, and with what clothes look and fit best on me. Overall, I got loads of stuff — pants, blouses, shoes, purses, accessories, and even makeup. I would definitely recommend other students and those in need to visit.”
