In its 80-year history, the United Nations has selected nine Secretaries-General — and every single one of them has been a man. But as the world body prepares to choose its 10th leader, momentum is building to finally shatter that glass ceiling, a topic recently explored in depth by the Christian Science Monitor.

Central to this global conversation is CCNY faculty member Dr. Jean Krasno, a prominent UN scholar and chair of the Campaign for a Woman UN Secretary-General (WomanSG). Krasno argues that the unique challenges women face in overcoming structural hurdles and discrimination throughout their careers cultivate precisely the qualities needed to lead the UN today: high-stakes diplomacy, strategic vision, and adept management of both people and complex budgets. As debates intensify over the future of multilateralism, Krasno’s work brings vital attention to the campaign for gender equity at the absolute peak of international leadership.
