The Powell School recently welcomed Dr. Annika Marlen Hinze as Academic Director of CCNY’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) Program and Professor of Political Science. The MPA Program, which is based at the Moynihan Center, prepares a new generation of civic leaders for impactful careers in government, nonprofits, and community organizations serving New York and beyond.

A scholar of urban politics, immigration policy, and democratic theory, Dr. Hinze joins CCNY from Fordham University. “I am incredibly excited to join the Moynihan Center at CCNY as the new Academic Director for the MPA program,” said Dr. Hinze. “This role unites my deep passion for cities and social justice with a lifelong admiration for public service. I cannot wait to start working with CCNY’s incredible students to get into the weeds of urban and local policymaking.”

At Fordham, Dr. Hinze Annika was a Professor in the Department of Political Science. She also served as the Director of the Urban Studies Program from July 2016 through June 2024, and was a co-PI on the Initiative on Migrants, Migration, and Human Dignity, an interdisciplinary hub committed to cultivating student leaders in the field of migration, supporting faculty research, and building relationships and collaborating with migrant-serving organizations in New York City and at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Her research and teaching focus on urban politics, immigration policy and social, racial and immigrant justice in cities. In addition to her journal articles, she has published several books on immigrant integration, and urban politics. She is the co-editor of the International Political Science review and an editorial board member of the Urban Affairs Review. Dr. Hinze has done field research in Canada, Germany, Turkey, and the United States and just finished writing a book about U.S. immigration policy.
