We look forward to welcoming Dora Suárez as the 2026-2027 Marina Fernando Guest Lecturer in Fall 2026. Professor Suárez brings to this position a deep and engaged knowledge of migration and environmental issues in Latin America. Thoroughly interdisciplinary, her work focuses on the Global South and draws on Indigenous, feminist, and decolonial frameworks to challenge conventional understandings of belonging, mobility, and collective life while charting new possibilities for knowledge production and political action.
As both a scholar and educator, she is deeply committed to making complex global issues accessible and meaningful to students from diverse backgrounds. With ample experience in public-facing scholarship and student mentorship, she will connect Colin Powell School students to a broad range of globally engaged non-profit and public-sector organizations in New York City and beyond.
The Marina Fernando Guest Lectureship
Established in 2024, this Lectureship honors Marina Fernando, Emerita Director of International Studies and Study Abroad, and is awarded to a practitioner or practitioner-academic whose research focuses on the Global South. The program was funded by a group of alumni in recognition of the impact Fernando had on their lives. Over the course of the academic year, the Marina Fernando Guest Lecturer teaches one class each semester and gives a public lecture in the spring. The Guest Lecturer also mentors undergraduate students regarding careers in the fields of international and global studies.
